Ferrari Mondial Drivetrain

The engines of the Mondials were identical to those of the contemporary 308, 328 and 348. The basic unit was a light alloy, fuel injected 90° V8. The Mondial 8 debuted with a 2926cc two valve engine. The Mondial qv gained power with the addition of two more valves per cylinder. The Mondial 3.2 was again up-rated, this time with the 3185cc engine also found in the 328. Finally, the Mondial t was the first car to use the new 3405cc engine which would later appear in the Ferrari 348.

Mondial 8:

The Mondial 8's engine was an all alloy 90° V8. The cylinder liners were shrunk-in cast iron. Connecting rods were paired and balanced with the pistons and five main bearing crankshaft. The compression ratio was 8.8:1. Two valves per cylinder were actuated by dual overhead camshafts. Exhaust was by large diameter manifolds with a tuned system. Fuel was metered by Bosch K-Jetronic and digital electronic ignition was Magneti Marelli. Cooling was by a front mounted radiator. Power was rated at 205bhp at 6600rpm. Torque was above 178lb/ft at 5000rpm. The Mondial 8 weighed 3496lbs dry in US trim.

Mondial qv:

The Mondial qv was so named because of its quatrovalvole or four valve per cylinder heads. Power was rated at 235bhp at 6800rpm in North America, while torque peaked at over 187lb/ft at 5500rpm. Dry weight dropped to 3419lbs for the coupe and 3286lbs for the convertible.

Mondial 3.2:

The Mondial 3.2 had the 3185cc engine also found in the 328 two seaters. Other changes included shrunk-in aluminum/nikasil cylinder liners, a larger, redesigned oil cooler, new spark plugs, and Marelli's Microplex ignition. With compression of 9.2:1, power and torque were rated at 260bhp at 7000rpm and 214lb/ft at 5500rpm. The 3.2 coupe weighed 3395lbs, the contemporary ragtop weighed 3373lbs.

Mondial t:

The Mondial t premiered Ferrari's 3.4 liter V8, the greatest change being its longitudinal alignment in the subframe, the transmission remaining transverse. With a compression ratio of 10.4:1, revised valve geometry, dry sump lubrication and a sophisticated Bosch Motronic system to control fuel injection and ignition, the Mondial t produced 300bhp at 7200rpm and 237lb-ft of torque at 4200rpm, quite enough move a coupe weighing 3439lbs or a cabriolet weighing 3461lbs with great alacrity.

Transmissions:

The transmission in all Mondial models from 1980 to 1989 was a five forward and single reverse gear, all synchromesh unit. Mounted transversely like the engine, the transmission received power through a single plate hydraulic clutch, a limited slip differential, and solid driveshafts with constant velocity joints. In the Mondial t the engine was aligned longitudinally while the transmission was transverse giving the model its name, "t" for trasversale. Optional on the Mondial t was a semi-automatic transmission with a gated shifter and computer-controlled clutch.
