Ferrari F355 Design

Pininfarina styled the F355 with a subtle balance of aerodynamics and aesthetics. Simplification and unity of form was the key, with the application of rounded edges and new forms that shaped the air and pleased the eye. The F355 Spider, with its electronically-controlled soft top, offered a different visage but the lines were as pure. The Serie Fiorano took the ultimate step by lowering the car's stance and adding tastefully subtle styling cues to more closely identify it with the Scuderia Ferrari. In all cases, the result was breathtaking.

The development goal for aerodynamic characteristics was twofold: - negative lift (Cz) without the addition of unnecessary styling elements; - a balanced distribution of the Cza and Czp (vertical aerodynamic loads on the axles). The front bumper incorporated an air intake that cools the brake discs while the spoiler area was shaped to optimize the air flow channeled into the underbody for negative lift.

The side air ducts were generous and merged into the aerodynamically shaped sills that contribute to fairing the wheels, an important element on a car with wide section tires. At the rear, wind tunnel experiments produced a tail that incorporates a "nolder" upper lip spoiler to enhance grip. Thanks to the experience gained with Formula 1 cars in the wind tunnel with boundary layer belt, the F355 underbody was fully integrated with the system, achieving a result consistent with the goals.
