Ferrari Enzo Transmission
The Enzo transmits power to the drive wheels through a rear gearbox unit mounted directly to the engine, much like the Ferrari Formula One racing cars. In keeping with this theme, the driver uses the F1 paddle shift transmission with no automatic mode as it would not be in keeping with the nature of the Enzo. The F1 transmission is an electrohydraulic system that works the gearbox and clutch through electronic management as the driver pulls paddles positioned behind the steering wheel.
There are two driver selectable settings for the Enzo's F1 transmission. "Sport" is designed for smooth but rapid shifts and will be employed in most cases. "Race" can be chosen for the most aggressive shifting, such as that required in competition. Both settings correspond to logic incorporated into the car control system related to the suspension's damper set-up and traction control (ASR).
Enzo designers made fast shift times a priority, attaining an average speed of 150 milliseconds for a gear change. The gear levers are made of carbon fiber, with an optimized shape and size, increasing at the top and bottom to allow the driver a larger steering lock without having to take their hands from the wheel, which contains Sport/Race shift mode pushbuttons and the reverse gear button.
The gearbox is coupled directly to the engine by an element that incorporates the engine oil tank, the bevel gear pair and the self-locking differential (lock percentage: 30 on thrust and 55 on release). The extremely rapid shift performance is enhanced by triple cone synchronizers on all 6 gears, while an 8.5" twin plate clutch improves engine dynamics and synchronization.
